Auto review: 2025 GMC Canyon is the king of mid-size trucks

While pickup trucks are still widely used for contractors and service employees, in the last decade the truck market has evolved in a lifestyle and recreation direction.

In Grasso’s Garage, we consider the 2025 GMC Canyon AT4 AEV 4WD. Consumers looking for off-road excellence, comfort and style while not breaking the bank will appreciate its $45K base price. Powered by the popular 2.7-liter Turbomax four-cylinder engine, the Canyon has plenty of get up and go.

Our tester came with the $10,000 AT4 AEV Off-road package, featuring wheel flares, skid plates and monster 17-inch bead lock wheels. Also available is the $6K AT4X package providing locking differentials, red seat belts, bed liner, trailer package, moldings, and underbody cameras. The increase in off-road capability reduced the truck's fuel mileage significantly, bringing it to 16.4 mpg on our test.

Our Volcanic Red Tint coat was beautiful in the sun, as the paint glimmer was eye-catching. Our tester also included the Technology package and AT4 Premium Package, adding even more upgrades to the already stacked list of accouterments.

The GMC Canyon brings out the best in the small truck category, with many uses for consumers in this category. While pricing has become more realistic in most truck models, the GMC Canyon has a great base price but does gets pricey when upgraded and stacked with every possible option.

Lastly, unlike most trucks, the more you tow with the GMC brand, the more comfortable the ride. I own a GMC Sierra Elevation, and I love towing with it, as the ride and comfort are just as good as with my Volvo wagon.
