Do Just One Thing
Before cold weather arrives, use a candle to check your windows for sneaky drafts. Slowly move the flame or smoke around the edges of the window frame. If the flame flickers or the smoke suddenly wavers, outdoor air may be finding its way inside. Seal small gaps with caulk or weatherstripping to keep warm air in and cold air out. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, air leakage and improperly installed insulation can waste 20% or more of the energy used to heat or cool a home.
